What to Expect
The John Payton Leadership Academy is an interactive, practice-focused learning experience designed and taught by lawyers, for lawyers. Through guided reflection, interactive learning, and hands-on experience, participants strengthen their leadership skills, define their leadership brand, and deepen their engagement with the D.C. Bar and the broader community. Sessions focus on leadership skills that matter in the legal profession, including:

Inspiring and influencing others

Creating vision and defining success

Building trust and communicating effectively

Leading meetings and teams
-
Navigating change and complexity
Acceptance notices will be sent by March 27, 2026.
Who Should Apply
The John Payton Leadership Academy is open to all D.C. Bar members, from new associates to experienced attorneys, who are interested in strengthening their leadership skills and expanding their professional impact.
You should consider applying if you:

Can commit to full participation in all three in-person sessions
The 2026 cohort will be limited in size to support a highly engaged, discussion-driven learning environment and a diverse group of participants.

Learn how to bring out the best in people and organizations

Apply leadership skills to make a meaningful difference in their community
