District of Columbia Courts

The District of Columbia Courts form the Judicial Branch of the D.C. Government, consisting of the Court of Appeals, the highest court, and the Superior Court, which is a trial court. This unified court system allows all cases to be filed at one level. Judges are nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate, serving 15-year terms with the possibility of reappointment. The system includes about 120 judges, 24 magistrate judges, and a staff of roughly 1,500.
